EMPLOYMENT

Applicants wishing to apply for the position of Police Officer should note the following information pertaining to this career field and the qualifications that must exist for employment.

The Town of Vinton Police Department requires these minimal qualifications to be considered for employment:

Must be at least 21 years of age.
Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
Must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of Virginia upon employment.
Must possess a valid Virginia Driver's License upon employment.
Must be of good moral character having no felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude (lying, stealing, ect.).

The applicant will be required to perform the following steps in the application process prior to employment:

Must submit a Town of Vinton application of employment.
Must pass a written examination.
Must pass the physical agility test.
Must pass the oral interview board.
Must pass a psychological screening test.
Must pass a polygraph examination.
Conduct an interview with the Chief of Police

Applicants who successfully complete the above will be considered for the next step of the application process.
Applicants who are not Law Enforcement certified through the Commonwealth of Virginia must successfully complete law enforcement certification training. The Vinton Police Department utilizes the Cardinal Criminal Justice Academy in Salem, VA for basic and advanced police training.
 
Applicants who complete the law enforcement academy will be required to complete a minimum of 320 hours of field training; prior certified officers will be required to complete a minimum of 200 hours of field training.

Benefits

Starting salary is $34,289.00 for non-certified applicants and an increase in starting salary will be considered for those who possess a DCJS Law Enforcement certification at the time of employment.

Patrol officers work 12 hour shifts, 7 - 7, rotating every four weeks from daylight to evening shifts. Current overtime opportunities include Manna Ministries, DMV grants, and town events.
